The Plum Cottage Bedroom Guide
The Plum Cottage Bedroom Collection blends cozy cottage charm with a touch of vintage elegance, creating a space that feels warm, collected, and inviting. Rich shades of plum and lavender are layered with soft creams, warm wood tones, and touches of antique-inspired brass, while florals woven throughout the rug, pillows, and artwork bring the entire room together. Traditional furniture, textured bedding, and thoughtfully chosen accessories give the space character without making it feel overly formal or overly coordinated. The result is a bedroom that feels as though it has been collected over time—comfortable, romantic, and full of personality. As always, use this room as inspiration and make it your own by choosing the pieces, colors, and details that you love.
Kelly’s Notes
The Plum Cottage Bedroom is a great example of how one statement piece can inspire an entire room. Here are a few of my favorite styling tips from this space that you can use when creating your own.
Make the Rug the Statement
The rug is the beautiful statement piece in this room and really sets the tone for the entire design. And don’t be afraid to use an area rug just because your bedroom has carpet! I have carpet in my own bedroom and still use a statement rug. Layering a rug over carpet adds color, pattern, texture, and so much visual interest. It can completely transform the room and give your eye a place to land.
Choose Generous Bedding
One of my favorite tricks for creating a more luxurious-looking bed is choosing a comforter large enough to drape beautifully toward the floor. Depending on the dimensions of your bed and mattress, this may mean sizing up from your actual mattress size. Always check the measurements rather than relying solely on the size listed on the package. That extra length and fullness makes such a difference in giving the bed a soft, elevated look.
Layer Your Pillows
Think of your pillows in layers rather than lining everything up in one row. For this bed, the 24” × 24” purple floral pillows create the back decorative layer. The cream shams that coordinate with the comforter sit in front, followed by the purple lumbar pillow as the finishing accent. Varying the sizes, shapes, colors, and textures gives the bed that full, professionally styled appearance without needing an excessive number of pillows.
Go Substantial with Artwork
Artwork above a bed should feel substantial enough to balance the scale of the furniture below it. This room is designed around a king-size bed, so I chose a large horizontal landscape that visually anchors the wall rather than a smaller piece that could get lost above such a large bed. When recreating the look, you don’t necessarily need this exact artwork—look for a large landscape, meadow, or floral print with colors that complement your room.
Keep the Curtains Soft & Neutral
Because the rug is already such a beautiful focal point, I chose neutral curtains with subtle detailing rather than introducing another bold pattern. They add softness and character while allowing the rug and plum accents to remain the stars of the room.
Hang Curtains High & Long
One of the easiest ways to make a bedroom feel taller and more polished is to hang the curtain rod above the window trim rather than directly on top of it. Choose curtain panels long enough to reach the floor once the rod is installed at that height. I love curtains that just touch—or very softly meet—the floor. It creates a much more finished, custom-looking effect.
